Tromsø Sami Week 2027 and Sami National Day

Tromsø Sami Week 2027 runs 31 January to 7 February 2027. What the organiser has published, Sami National Day on 6 February, the reindeer race, and a camp visit that week.

Updated November 2026

Sami Week in Tromsø runs from Sunday 31 January to Sunday 7 February 2027. It is organised by the Midnight Sun Marathon Foundation, which has run it every year since 2004, it is built around Sami National Day on 6 February, a Saturday in 2027, and it ends with the Norwegian Championships in reindeer racing in the city centre. That is what the organiser has published. The 2027 programme was not out when its page was read on 4 November 2026, so this page gives no day, street or line-up for any event.

Why 6 February

6 February is the Sami national day. It marks the first Sami national assembly, held in Trondheim in 1917. The day was first celebrated in 1993 and is an official flag day in Norway. Sametinget, the Sami Parliament of Norway, which opened in Karasjok on 9 October 1989 and has 39 representatives, sets this out on its own pages.

The reindeer race

The week ends with the Norwegian Championships in reindeer racing, held in the city centre. The organiser has not said on which day, at what time or on which street the 2027 race runs, and no map on this site pins it. Watch the organiser’s page for the programme.

Adding a camp visit to the week

Sami Week is a city event. If you would also like to feed the reindeer, eat in a gamme and hear about the Sami way of life with reindeer, a camp visit fits around it: Tromsø Lapland’s Tromsø: Reindeer Feeding and Sami Culture with Lunch takes 4.5 hours from the Radisson Blu on Sjøgata 7, in the daytime, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. It was per person from $164 in current promotion (usually $183), checked November 2026.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The calendar above is the daytime visit, so you can check a day in the week against it. Hotel pickup is not included. For a joik as well, Wondering Reindeer AS's tour with a Sami reindeer herder and Tromsø Arctic Reindeer's ranch visit include one; for an evening, the camp dinner runs from 1 November to the beginning of April.

In town during the week

Map of central and south Tromsø with the walking tour start at Storgata 95, the Radisson Blu on Sjøgata 7, the Prostneset terminal and the Arctic University Museum on Lars Thøringsveg 10
Central Tromsø, where Sami Week takes place, and the Arctic University Museum to the south. The organiser has not published a street for the reindeer race, so it has no pin.

Two things in town run whether or not there is a festival. The Arctic University Museum of Norway has exhibitions about the Sami people, with a guided tour of its Sami exhibitions on Fridays at 13:00 from September 2026 to May 2027; Friday 5 February 2027 falls inside Sami Week, though the tour may not run on national holidays or special occasions. And the Sami history and mythology walk starts at Storgata 95. The museum and the city walk has the hours and fees.

Where to stay informed

The organiser’s page is the source for the programme. For Sami National Day itself, Sametinget’s pages explain the day and its symbols.
