Sami Culture in Tromsø Without a Camp

Sami culture in Tromsø without a camp visit: the Arctic University Museum's Sami exhibitions and hours, the Sami history walk, and the Sea Sami exhibition at Full Steam.

Updated November 2026

You can spend a day with Sami culture in Tromsø without leaving town. The Arctic University Museum of Norway has exhibitions about the Sami people and an adult ticket of NOK 130, with a guided tour of its Sami exhibitions on Fridays. If you want a person to tell the story as you walk, book Sami Walking Experience’s Tromsø City Walking Tour with Sámi History & Mythology: 2.5 hours from Storgata 95, limited to 8, with a Sami culture bearer. It was per person from $59, checked November 2026, with 188 reviews and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

The calendar above is the walk. It starts at Storgata 95 in the centre of Tromsø.

The walk

The walk follows Tromsø’s oldest streets and tells two histories at once: how the city grew from a small fishing village into a gateway to the Arctic, from the 1300s to the present, and the history, culture and mythology of the Sami people, told by a Sami culture bearer who grew up with these stories. It covers about 1.6 km in 2.5 hours, at a steady pace, with one short seated break along the way. It runs in English and is built as a learning experience, so you need a solid understanding of the language. In summer it follows wheelchair-friendly routes.

The Arctic University Museum

The Arctic University Museum of Norway, run by UiT The Arctic University of Norway, stands at Lars Thøringsveg 10 on the south of Tromsø island, and displays exhibitions about the Sami people. UiT puts it about 2.5 km from the city centre; bus 40 stops at Tromsø Museum.

UiT’s page names no price for the guided tour, and it does not say whether the general ticket covers the Sami exhibitions, so ask at the desk. Book the guided tour through Visit Tromsø or the museum. Read the museum’s visitor page before you go: it also lists the Christmas and Easter hours.

The Sea Sami exhibition at the Full Steam Museum

Not every Sami story is about reindeer. Full Steam Tromsø AS's guided Sea Sami excursion, at Søndre Tollbodgate 3, is led by a Sami guide wearing a kofte, the traditional garment. It covers the Sea Sami way of life by the sea, fishing tools and household objects, the kofte itself, and a live joik demonstration, and it includes entry to the museum’s Northern Light and Seafarer exhibitions. It was per person from $41, checked November 2026; food, drinks and souvenirs are not included. It has only 11 reviews, and its listed duration of “1 minute” is plainly an error, so check the length before you go.

Where they are

Map of central and south Tromsø with the walking tour start at Storgata 95, the Radisson Blu on Sjøgata 7, the Prostneset terminal on Samuel Arnesens gate 5 and the Arctic University Museum on Lars Thøringsveg 10, 2.9 km by road
Central Tromsø: the walk’s start at Storgata 95, the Radisson Blu and the Prostneset terminal, and the Arctic University Museum, 2.9 km by road from Prostneset.

The walk’s start, the Radisson Blu, where Tromsø Lapland’s camp visits meet, and the Prostneset terminal all sit within a few streets of each other in the centre. The museum is the outlier: a route planner gives 2.9 km by road from Prostneset. The Full Steam Museum, at Søndre Tollbodgate 3, is not drawn on the map.

A day of Sami culture in town

Check the walk’s start times for your date, then take bus 40 to the museum for the rest of the day; on a Friday, time it for the 13:00 guided tour of the Sami exhibitions. The Full Steam exhibition fits another day, or the gap before or after. If you then want the reindeer and a meal in a gamme as well, what a Sami experience in Tromsø contains explains the camp visits.
