Which Sami Camp Visit from Tromsø

Sami camp visits from Tromsø side by side: the daytime visit, visits with a joik, evening visits with dinner, sled rides and the walk in town, with prices checked.

Updated November 2026

Choose by what you want from the visit, not by the reindeer, because nearly every camp visit here includes feeding them. For a first visit in the daytime with a meal in a gamme and a talk on Sami life, book Tromsø Lapland’s Tromsø: Reindeer Feeding and Sami Culture with Lunch, 4.5 hours from the Radisson Blu on Sjøgata 7, per person from $164 in current promotion (usually $183), checked November 2026. If you want a joik, choose a visit that lists one. If you want the night sky, choose an evening visit, which gives a chance of the northern lights and no promise. If you want the stories without a camp, walk in town.

What each kind of visit adds, and what it charges

Illustration: reindeer gathering around three visitors, seen from behind, holding out feed in the snow at a camp in winter daytime, birch trees and low mountains behind
Illustration. Feeding the reindeer at a camp in winter daytime.

The daytime visit is the simplest: reindeer, a meal in a gamme, a talk. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included. Tromsø Lapland's other daytime listing from the same meeting point adds a winter suit and snow boots and a meal with vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free options, with a 50-minute drive.

A visit with a joik gives you the song as well as the stories. Wondering Reindeer AS's tour is guided by a Sami reindeer herder the whole way, in a small group, with a joik in a lavvu and bidus for lunch; hotel pickup is not included unless you start from the Scandic Ishavshotel, and alcoholic drinks or sodas at the hotel are not included. The ranch visit ends with stories and a joik around a campfire; bring your own booster seat for a child.

An evening visit adds dinner and the dark. Tromsø Lapland's evening visit lends snow suits and boot covers; tips are not included. Tromsø Arctic Reindeer's camp dinner picks up at Prostneset at 17:40, serves a 3-course dinner in the gamme with bidos as the main course, ends with a joik, returns about 22:30 and runs from 1 November to the beginning of April. The camp visit with an aurora chase is limited to 18, has a minimum age of 6 and returns about 01:30.

A town visit needs no transport. The walk covers about 1.6 km with one seated break; transport to Tromsø, meals and drinks are not included. The museum and the city walk adds the university museum, which you visit on its own ticket.

Sledding is a separate choice

Several camps add a short reindeer-sled ride in winter: Tromsø Lapland's sledding version rides for up to 30 minutes when the snow allows, two adults to a sled and no one over 110 kg, with part of the price refunded if the weather stops the ride; personalised pick-up points are not included. Best Arctic AS's ride lasts 10 to 15 minutes. If the sled is the point of your trip rather than the culture, tromsoreindeertour.com covers the sled tours in detail.

The drive

Map of the area south and east of Tromsø with the Prostneset terminal in Tromsø and three camp places named on the listings: Breivikeidet, 55 km by road, Nordkjosbotn, 81 km by road, and Camp Tamok, 104 km by road
From the Prostneset terminal in Tromsø, by road: Breivikeidet 55 km, Nordkjosbotn 81 km, Camp Tamok 104 km. The daytime visit names no camp, so it has no pin.

Distance decides how long you sit on a bus. By road from the Prostneset terminal, a route planner gives about 55 km to the camp area at Breivikeidet, 81 km to Nordkjosbotn and 104 km to Camp Tamok. The listings give their own times: Tromsø Lapland a transfer of 45 minutes to an hour for its evening visit to Breivikeidet, Reindeer Experience Tromsø a camp about an hour’s drive from the centre, Best Arctic AS a transfer of an hour each way, and Destination Tromso a 90-minute bus ride to Camp Tamok.

The short verdict

For most first visits, the daytime visit is the one to book: it has the reindeer, the meal and the talk, and nothing you have to give up a night for. Pick the herder’s tour or the ranch visit for a joik, an evening visit for a chance of the northern lights, and the walk if you would rather stay in town.
